Fishing the Tiamen in Central Mongolia

Short Tours Description

Day 1:

Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by your guide. He will bring us to your comfortable, centrally located hotel.

In the afternoon we will have a drive to Zaisan Memorial, build by the Russians to commemorate unknown soldiers from different wars. Located on a Southern hill of Ulaanbaatar, we will be able to enjoy an excellent view of the capital and the surrounding countryside.

In the evening enjoy a welcome diner in one of the best restaurants of Ulaanbaatar. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 2:

Today we will fly to Tsetserleg in Arhangai province by twin engine turbo prop aircraft. On our arrival we will drive around this small town, and visit the marketplace. Later we will drive across Tsaagan pass to Tayhir and pitch camp by the Tamir or Chuluut River. We will meet with local herdsmen, and try the luck in the river. Tented Camp.

Day 3:

After breakfast we will drive from Tayhir 150 km to Tariat. We will drive through the mountain forest steppe zone. Mixed coniferous forest is found on the cooler, moister northern slopes whereas steppe vegetation predominates other slopes. We will camp on a beautiful spot by the beautiful Terhiin Tsaagan Lake, devoid of any boats.

Pike (Esox lucius) is numerous here and no one know how large they grow here. There is also Lenok Trout (Brachymistax lenok) in the lake. Spin fishing is recommended and a float ring could be handy to bring. Tented Camp.

Day 4 - 6:

Three full days have been set aside for this extremely scenic and dramatic area dominated by the Terhiin Tsaagan Lake and the extinct Horgo volcano crater and its adjacent lava fields. The elevation is 2060m above sea level. The Sumin River, a tributary of the Chuluut, drains the lake. It flows through some nearby dramatic canyons.

Certainly Northern Pike is found, as well as Taimen Salmon (Hucho taimen) and Arctic Graylings (Thymallus arcticus arcticus). The Taimen is the largest of the Salmonidae family reaching up to 2 meters! The Grayling reach up to of 40-50 cm here. Tented Camp.

Day 7:

We will drive north along the wide steppe valley of the Khanui River toward Erdenemandal. Full day drive and pitch camp en route. Tented Camp.

Day 8 - 11:

We will now come into the northernmost sub province of Arhangai. Depending on the river levels we will reach different fishing spots. Lenok can grow extremely large here (up to 110cm) and taimen is certainly present. Tented Camp.

Day 12:

Today we will start our journey back towards Ulaanbaatar. We will drive south through Arhangai province, and pitch camp at the confluence of the Tamir and Orkhon Rivers, in a genuine steppe area. Certainly, there is fish around here too! Tented Camp.

Day 13:

Full day drive to the Mongolian capital across the steppes. En route we will be able to make two stops in the south area of Bulgan province, and visit the ruins of Aftan Khans Palace that stand out on the steppe. And a brief stop at a lake, where we will reach the surfaced trunk road at Lun. Tented Camp.

Day 14:

Day at leisure in the Mongolian capital.

Day 15:

Transfer to the airport and departure for your next destination or extended journey in Mongolia.

Departures Date

If you are a group on your own, departures are whenever you wish.

If your are looking for other people to join you, we can have a look at the demands we had. Maybe we can help you to find some travel companions to make the trip with you. This is however not easy because each person has different dates and wishes. The easiest is to be a group on your own.

If you travel alone and want to join a group, we offer fixed tour departures those days:

Group Size

2 to 12 people

Normally the group size is a minimum of two people per trip. However if some people desire to travel alone, we can book the tour for a single person. The price will be 75% of the price for a 2 person tour.

We offer 3 different price categories for our tours:

  • Budget Trips: tented camp, cook, food, guide, Russian mini van

  • Normal Trips: ger camp stay with food, guide, Russian mini van

  • Luxury Trips: ger camp stay with food, guide, Japanese jeep

Please contact us for the updated prices. We offer special discount prices for off season tours.

Depending on the tour you book and the service you want to have during your trip, you will overnight in ger camps or tented camps. Family stay is always possible.

  • Gers Camp. Gers from Ger Camp are the traditional felt tents of nomadic herders. Each ger is furnished with a wood stove and beautifully painted furniture such as beds, a table and stools. Gers are based on double occupancy. Each ger camp has its restaurant, western style toilet and hot water showers. Most visitors find their stay in gers, which provide an authentic taste of Mongolian culture and adventure, their most enjoyable experience in Mongolia.

  • Tented Camp is a camp build on a nice spot. The travellers will sleep in Western style tents. We will however do our best to offer you the best available service. We pride ourselves on the level of comfort we provide while camping in these remote areas, but camping is not for everyone. It is important to remain open-minded and physically willing.

  • Family stay is an experience a traveller to Mongolia should experience. You can tell us in advance exactly where you want to have a family stay during your trip, or, if you do not like to plan to much in advance, the driver and the guide can organise a family stay while travelling. If you plan to have an overnight in a Mongolian Nomadic family, you should take sleeping bags and matrasses with you.
